About Richard

Richard Gompels, PGA Teaching Professional

After completing the PGA Traineeship in 1998 and becoming a full member of the PGA in 1999, I have continued to deepen my understanding of the game through both competition and ongoing education. My playing experience includes tournaments such as pro-ams, highlighted by winning the Balgowlah ProAm in 1999, and competing in the Queensland PGA Championship. Alongside competitive play, I have invested heavily in professional development through PGA seminars, coaching summits, and direct learning from leading industry experts including Dr Rob Neal (golf biomechanist) and Karl Morris (mental coach to tour players such as Ryan Fox, Graeme McDowell, and Louis Oosthuizen). This combination of practical experience and continued education has shaped the comprehensive coaching approach I use today.

I am committed to helping golfers of all levels gain a deeper, more accurate understanding of their game. My coaching integrates a range of advanced tools, including the Flightscope X3 launch monitor with Fusion Tracking, GASP video analysis software, the Boditrak pressure-mapping mat, and a 3D body-tracking system. These technologies allow me to measure what a player is actually doing, rather than guessing, so every lesson is precise, personalised, and built on reliable data. By combining these tools with my experience and coaching philosophy, I help players make meaningful, lasting improvements in their performance.

Coaching philosophy

Every golfer has the potential to improve

My coaching philosophy is built on the belief that every golfer has the potential to improve when they receive clear guidance, structured development, and consistent support. With more than 25 years as a PGA Professional and over a decade running my own coaching business, I focus on helping players build skills that last, technically, physically, and mentally.

I take a player-centred approach, tailoring each session to the individual's goals, learning style, and stage of development. Whether working with beginners or competitive players, my aim is always to create an environment where learning feels purposeful, enjoyable, and confidence-building.

Having coached for the last 25 years, I understand that progress comes from a blend of sound fundamentals, effective practice habits, and honest communication. I use modern coaching resources, technology, and equipment, supported by my ambassador partnerships with Mizuno and Ping, to ensure players receive accurate feedback and the best possible tools for improvement.
